The plate forms a “perfect target” surface when positioned directly against the working surface of the magnet. The force that is required to pull the payload away from the magnetic assembly — the holding force — depends not only on the performance of the magnet itself, but also on the qualities of the payload. Ferromagnetic materials with high permeability (mu_r > 4000) and high saturation polarization (J_sat > 2), such as iron, low-carbon steels, or specialized magnetic alloys like permendur, are recommended. This steel target plate is manufactured from a high-saturation, high-permeability steel alloy to maximize the holding force.
